KENNEWICK, WA - Kennewick is one step closer to getting a fifth fire station in the city, but it's in a different location than originally planned.
City council members approved the purchase of an acre of land at the corner of 10th Avenue and Kellogg Street--the exact address is 6004 West 10th Avenue.--for $400,000.
The new location is about a half mile from the previous location the city bought back in May, at 5500 West 10th Avenue.
A study identified the new location as being ideal about three years ago but, at the time, the homeowner didn't want to sell his property; that has since changed.
"This was a great opportunity to get the best spot for a future station, right there at the corner," Evelyn Lusignan said. "And, we have a due diligence period for the sell of that land--if everything goes through and the land purchase goes through, then the city council will consider surplusing and selling the parcel that was purchased last year," Lusignan continued.
Once the sale is final, the city will start focusing on the cost, designs and manpower needed for the new station.
The Kennewick Fire Department will hold an open house Thursday, February 13th for anyone with questions or would like to learn more about the future fire station. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, located at4403 West 10th Avenue in Kennewick.
