SALUTING THE BRAVE: Medal Of Honor Recipient Ty Carter Honored At North Central High School

SPOKANE, Wash. -

SPOKANE, Wash. - SSG. Ty Carter was honored Thursday as a distinguished alumni at North Central High School. Carter was awarded the Medal Of Honor in August of 2013 by President Obama at the White House. Carter, a Marine and Army veteran was awarded the medal for his role in an October 2009 battle in Afghanistan.

The ceremony at North Central horned Carter with a class ring which he never received after his graduation in 1998. Carter has traveled around the country doing hundreds of interviews and speaking engagements since receiving the medal in August. Carter told KHQ's Dylan Wohlenhaus Thursday, "Its more personal" after explaining what its like to be honored in front of a hometown crowd. "The people that I remember, the smiles on their faces, the pride that they have, when I see them I automatically get transported back to high school, me carrying books around." Carter said Thursday.

Carter spoke to hundreds of North Central students as he was honored Thursday. Carter connected with students saying that "If I didn't do what I did" The day of the battle, "I believed I would lose a loved one." Carter said. "A lot of people here, we have loved ones. If they were hurting, If they were in need I know that you would move heaven and earth to help them. So that makes you the same as me." Carter explained to the students Thursday.

    UPDATE: A suspicious item discovered in a mailbox near Middle Ave. in Spirit Lake, causing evacuations in the immediate area, has turned out to just be a toy grenade, according to the Spirit Lake Police Department. SLPD and other agencies were on scene investigating the incident and a robot was used to retrieve the object out of the box.
