PREVIOUS STORY:

Spokane Police are still searching for the driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a man trying to cross a busy street Sunday night.

The crash happened just before 9 p.m. at Mission & Riverton – an area not designed for pedestrians. Police say the man was trying to cross Mission but was hit by a gold or tan colored SUV heading eastbound. The driver never stopped.

The impact sent the man into the westbound lanes where police say two additional cars hit him; however, they say it’s likely the second westbound car didn’t realize there was a person in the street given the darkness and snowy conditions.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on the man Monday, but have yet to identify him, saying his next-of-kin have been hard to reach.

The intersection is clearly marked with signs telling pedestrians not to cross Mission at that intersection. The nearest crosswalk is a few blocks away.

At a press conference Monday, Spokane Police Capt. Brad Arleth said they would be looking into several factors including speed, weather, toxicology and whether surveillance video of the intersection exists. Police are also hoping to hear from additional witnesses who may have been in the area at the time of the crash, and say it’s likely the car(s) involved are now damaged.

If you have any information that can help, call police.
