Oregon Considers Bills Restricting E-Cigarettes

Posted: Updated:

SALEM, OR - Oregon may be joining 27 other states that make it illegal to provide electronic cigarettes to people younger than 18.

The tobacco-free devices turn nicotine solutions into vapor to simulate smoking. A state House committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday to work on two competing bills that would regulate e-cigarettes and their components.

Both options would make it illegal to give or sell the e-cigarettes to minors. But one would go as far as banning their use in public buildings and workplaces, as Oregon now does with traditional cigarettes.

Supporters of the ban on public use are concerned secondhand vapor may pose health risks, but opponents say the evidence is lacking.
