Crime Tracker: One Ring Phone Scam Hits Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. - It's pretty common to want to return a missed phone call, even if you don't recognize the number. But beware! It could be part of a phone scam sweeping the country right now. It’s called the "one ring scam".

Here’s how it works: scammers overseas buy or steal lists of u-s cell phone numbers and use computers to mass dial those numbers. On your end, the phone rings just once or long enough for you see there's a missed call from an area overseas. When you call back, the scammers charge your phone bill just like a 9-hundred number. $20 for the call and another $9 for every minute you were on the line.

The Better Business Bureau says this scam works because it doesn't raise any red flags. It doesn’t ask for your social security number, your credit card number or any private information. The BBB in Spokane says it has received reports of people receiving these international calls, but no one in our area has reported returning the call and being charged. It reminds people to keep an eye out for missed phone calls from overseas and areas where you don't know anyone. It says to resist the urge to call back because you could end up paying a lot of money if your return that phone call.

(AP) - The Coast Guard says contract crews are working to pull up an old 20-foot-long tank that may be the potential source of an oil sheen on the Columbia River near Astoria.    Coast Guard spokeswoman Ali Flockerzi said Sunday that it could take a few days for workers to remove portions of the pier and access that tank located underneath the Cannery Pier.
