KENNEWICK, WA - Some offers just seem too good to be true. And when a Kennewick veteran got a call offering him to make plans for a free cemetery plot, he figured it was just a scam.
When Vietnam veteran, Sidney Garner, picked up the phone and listened to someone offer him a free cemetery plot at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, he thought it just seemed to good to be true.
"I hung up on them because I thought it was a scam. So I was very surprised that they'd offer something like that to veterans," said Garner.
But Mueller's funeral home in Kennewick says it's not a scam at all.
They've been giving veterans a free plot at Desert Lawn at no charge for years.
"It's legitimate and literally thousands of people in the last 22 years have taken advantage of this," said Frank Kumzak, Muller's Funeral Home.
Garner says his bad experience returning home from the Vietnam War makes him wary of others offering things to veterans.
"It's just something that I had never seen when I was growing up. We were always thought to be that guy over there and killed other people. They didn't want to be around us," Garner said.
A burial plot isn't cheap. It costs $1,000 and a cremation urn plot is $400.
Mueller's gives that to veterans for free, but they will have to pay a one time 20% maintenance fee required under state law.
The generous deal is their way of honoring veterans now and for years to come.
"This area is dedicated for the veterans and it's the Mueller's way of honoring the local area veterans to give them a spot to be honored for serving their country," said Kumzak.
All veterans can be included at Desert Lawn. You don't need to have served in a war. However you served, you deserve the life-long honor.
