PREVIOUS STORY:

SPOKANE, Wash. - According to court documents Jed Zillmer was one of eight soldiers who sued the army after they were denied disability benefits following traumatic experiences in combat. Family told KHQ on Wednesday that Zillmer had been shot in the foot and ultimately experienced a partial amputation to one of his toes.

Zillmer was shot and killed on Wednesday, just about an hour after he called police saying he wanted to die from a suicide by law enforcement. Zillmer pulled off the Sullivan exit in Spokane Valley and that is where six deputies fired. Zillmer had several guns in his possession and was also wearing a bulletproof vest.

Zillmer was awarded a purple heart following his time served in Afghanistan. The lawsuit alleged that the Army denied the benefits simply because the practicing medical professional didn't check the appropriate boxes indicating the struggles he was experiencing. A federal judge ultimately upheld the Army's decision to not extend the benefits to Zillmer and others.
