FULLERTON, Calif. – Jason Monda’s two-run single in the top of the 11th inning provided Washington State a 9-7 victory over No. 1 Cal State Fullerton, Saturday at Goodwin Field.

The rally started with a one-out single by Collin Slaybaugh. Nick Tanielu followed with a single, one of his career-high four hits, and freshman Cameron Frost walked to load the bases. Willie Kuhl, the fourth Cal State Fullerton (1-1) pitcher, relieved Koby Gauna (0-1).

After Kuhl recorded the second out on a fielder’s choice off the bat of P.J. Jones, Monda drove a ball through the left side for the game-winning hit for the Cougars (1-1).

Freshman Ian Hamilton (1-0) set the Titans down in order in the 11th to finishing off a three-shutout inning performance that earned him the victory.

“Jason (Monda) wasn’t swinging the bat the way he wanted to early in the ballgame, but he came up big in the end,” Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. “Ian (Hamilton) is not your typical freshman and he hasn’t been since he showed up on campus. He has calmness about him and has stuff to go with it.”

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead with a run in the second. Ian Sagdal reached on an error with one out. After Ben Roberts singled to send Sagdal to third, Trace Tam Sing delivered a sacrifice fly.

The Titans responded in the home half of the second with three runs on three hits while taking advantage of a Washington State error. The Cougars regained the lead at 4-3 with three runs in the third.

With one out, Slaybaugh reached on an error. Tanielu and Yale Rosen followed with back-to-back doubles to tie the game. After Rosen moved to third on an error, P.J. Jones plated the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.

The Cougars added to their lead with three runs in the sixth. Washington State loaded the bases with one out on singles by Sagdal and Ben Roberts, followed by a walk to Tam Sing. After Titans’ starter Justin Garza struck out Trek Stemp for the second out, Slaybaugh greeted reliever Tyler Peitzmeier with a two-run single. Tanielu capped the rally with an RBI-single to give the Cougars a 7-3 advantage.

Washington State starter Tanner Chleborad went five innings and gave up three runs, one earned, before turning the game over to the bullpen.

The Titans closed within 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth with two runs off Cougar reliever Jacob Schroeder. Cal State Fullerton pushed across another run in the seventh on two-straight singles off Joe Pistorese and a run-scoring hit against Sam Triece.

Cal State Fullerton tied the game in the eighth with an unearned run off Triece. An infield hit and a throwing error put the leadoff man on second. A wild pitch and a ground out brought home the equalizer.

Hamilton came on to pitch the ninth and yielded a one-out triple on a ball that Stemp claimed to have caught while crashing into the wall in left-center field. Hamilton then issued back-to-back walks, the second one intentional, before inducing a 1-2-3, ending-inning double play that forced extra innings.

The three-game series with the Titans concludes, Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
