GU Baseball Loses In Nebraska

TEMPE, Ariz. —  A ninth-inning rally came up just short as the Gonzaga University baseball team suffered a 7-4 setback to Nebraska on Saturday at the Husker Classic.

Trailing by five runs entering the top of the frame, the Bulldogs (0-2) loaded the bases without even registering a hit. Nicholas Minteer and Mitchell Gunsolus then collected back-to-back RBI singles to slice the deficit to three with one just one out.

After allowing the tying run to reach the plate, the Huskers eventually quashed the rally by forcing Sam Brown to ground into a game-ending double play. In addition to the two runners stranded in the ninth, the Bulldogs left seven on base for the game. They were just 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position, while the Cornhuskers finished 6-for-14.

Nebraska had a chance to get on the board first after Blake Headley led off the bottom of the second inning with a triple down the right field line. Gonzaga starter Zach Abbruzza, however, retired the next three batters to end the threat.

Abbruzza, though, could not hold off another Nebraska salvo in the third. The Cornhuskers sandwiched singles around a sac bunt before Michael Pritchard drove in the first runs of the game with a triple to right field. The next batter, Pat Kelly, laced a double to right to score Pritchard, giving the Cornhuskers a 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs cobbled together a response in the top of the fourth, advancing runners to second and third with just one out. Taylor Jones followed with a sacrifice fly to right for the Zags’ first run. Caleb Wood then scored on a balk by Nebraska pitcher Chance Sinclair, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The Huskers added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth, when Austin Christensen clubbed an RBI triple to right off Will Abram, who relieved Abbruzza to start the frame. Abbruzza suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on six hits and two walks.

Nebraska tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the eight with a sacrifice bunt and a pair of RBI singles, pushing the margin to 7-2. The Huskers finished with 11 hits and ceded just five to the Bulldogs. Gunsolus paced GU, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
