YAKIMA, WA - Tuesday night, the Yakima City Council talks about the new design plan for North First Street.

Council members will decide if a new design submitted last year would be the final one it moves forward with.

In September, the city hired a landscape architect to develop optional street designs.

In December, these options were reviewed by city of Yakima Technical Staff Development Service Team, which include representatives from the water, wastewater, storm water, streets, transit, codes and planning.

This group presented their favored design in January to the Council Built Environment Committee. Through discussion, the committee developed a modified design.

This option includes wider traffic lanes, seven-foot sidewalks on each side of the street, more landscaping, and a center median area with trees, as well as storm water drainage features.

The city is currently in the process of hiring a private civil engineering company to create the engineering plans.  Construction of the first phase of the project will begin in early 2015.
