YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima City Council may be voting for a new mayor earlier than expected after re-electing Mayor Micah Cawley last month.

Mayor Cawley is debating whether or not to run for the open Yakima Country Auditor position. NBC Right Now was the first to bring you current auditor Corky Holloway's decision to retire at the end of the year.

Mayor Cawley says his political experience uniquely prepares him for the job of auditor, specifically in motivating young people to vote.

"Being a young person that ran and being discouraged by people to not run it's tough when you're 18 and like 'oh well why should I register to vote? Or should I register to vote?'" Mayor Cawley said. "It's so important (to vote) it's almost like how do you not vote?"

Mayor Cawley says he expects to reach a decision about whether or not to run in the next few weeks.
