Accident Rates Improving For Older Drivers

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON (AP) - Today's drivers aged 70 and older are less likely to be involved in crashes than previous generations - and less likely to be killed or seriously hurt if they do crash.

That's according to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The study contradicts forecasts made a decade ago that traffic accidents would increase as the nation's population aged.

The institute says vehicles are getting safer, and seniors generally are getting healthier.

It's a shift that began taking hold in the mid-1990s. And it indicates that as baby boomers head into retirement years, they aren't making U.S. roads less safe.
