YAKIMA, WA - Senator Maria Cantwell was in our neck of the woods Thursday discussing the newly passed farm bill.

The senator said the bill will increase funding by 50 percent for specialty crop research, which will help reduce losses from pests and diseases.

Cantwell said the bill will also increase exports, giving a nice little boost to the local economy and the job market.

"Getting people to be first time Washington apple consumers, I think it could help grow jobs right here at home," said Senator Cantwell.

Senator Cantwell first toured Domex Superfresh Growers in Yakima. A family-owned business that sells crops in dozens of markets overseas.

The senator then traveled to Benton City to see how Inland Desert Nursery uses the "Clean Plant Network" to get healthy rootstock. The farm bill helps to keep the "Clean Plant Network" in place.
