Catholic Diocese of Yakima to Settle Two Sex Abuse Lawsuits

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA - The Catholic Diocese of Yakima is in the process of settling two lawsuits brought on by people who say they were sexually abused by clergy members.

The diocese says it has agreed to pay $40,000 to a woman who says she was sexually abused by three Jesuit priests during the 1970s. The woman contended that the Revs. Frank Duffy, John Morse and James Poole abused her when she was between the ages of 8 and 12.

In the second lawsuit, a man and the Yakima Diocese have agreed in principle to a settlement of $75,000. They have not yet signed the agreement.

The man in that lawsuit says Rev. Ernest Dale Calhoun abused him from the time he was 12-years-old to 17-year-old, starting in 1977.
