SUNNYSIDE, WA - Sunnyside Community Hospital handed out a community needs assessment survey, and your feedback is making the difference.

When the survey came back, the hospital found that a lot of people were traveling either to Yakima or the Tri-Cities for health services, including neurological care. But that's all about to change.

Dr. Dave Atteberry and his business partner started a neurological practice in Yakima four years ago. He said over time, he noticed a lot of patients trickling in for a consultation coming all the way from the lower valley.

"People don't like to travel for their health care," said Dr. Atteberry. "Most of my patients are in some way or another having difficulty with muscular skeletal problems, spine problems, brains that limit their mobility."

But patients don't have to worry about traveling anymore. Sunnyside Community Hospital is welcoming Dr. Atteberry and one other neurosurgeon to their team, starting a brand new service for lower valley patients with brain, spine and back conditions.

"We're just excited because we're here for the community," said John Gallagher, CEO of Sunnyside Community Hospital. "We're excited to be able to take care of the community locally."

"I think that local delivery of health care is better for the patients and Sunnyside has invested a considerable amount in being able to provide local services here," Dr. Atteberry said.

Gallagher said this is just another step in the right direction, and so far the community response has been great.

"We've actually seen a whole slew of patients already, and we've had two surgeries already very successful," Gallagher said.

Sunnyside Community Hospital is also adding their first psychiatric ward with the help of a million dollar great. Sunnyside was one of only four hospitals to receive some of the money from the Washington State Department of Commerce.
