YAKIMA, WA - Yakima Police are teaming up with some law enforcement heavy-weights to keep the city's most dangerous criminals behind bars.

Police said they've been meeting with agents from the FBI, DEA and the ATF, some of the best law enforcement agencies in the country. Local police said the federal agents have more resources and their arrests can lead to longer sentences for criminals.

The plan is to bring in one FBI agent within the next 30 days and he or she will work in the Yakima Police Station right alongside the gang unit.

Police said keeping gang members behind bars longer will help cut down on the number of repeat offenders and keep them out of the community.

"They're career criminals and they're convicted felons," said Captain Rod Light with the Yakima Police Department. "Those are the ones that we want to make sure go away for a very long time, and the best way we can do that is developing these partnerships."

Yakima Police have already doubled the size of their gang unit as well. Because of the expansion, police said gang unit officers can patrol seven days a week, keeping you safer.
