KENNEWICK, WA - Eleven local elementary school students will compete at the Tri-Tech Skills Center in Kennewick Thursday night to cook a healthy sandwich as part of the Sodexo Future Chefs contest.
Fourth and Fifth grade students submitted 48 recipes earlier this school year which have been narrowed down to 11 finalists. The winner will have their creation on the Kennewick School District lunch menu, as well as receive numerous other cooking-themed prizes!
"They're getting judged on creativity, they're getting judged on ease of preparation so it's a kid friendly recipe, on nutrition and of course taste is really important as well," says Sam Shick, the Nutrition Services Director for the Kennewick School District.
The students will be judged by a panel of four, including our own weather forecaster and resident foodie, Mike Linden!
The 4th and 5th grade students are mentored by Tri-Tech culinary students throughout the competition.
