PASCO, WA - Music students at Ochoa Middle School in Pasco are putting on an original show this weekend to help pay for their annual trip to Seattle.
"Viva La Musica" features songs from popular Latino artists including Selena, Marc Anthony and Carlos Santana. The two-hour show will also explore Tejano, salsa, mariachi and other Latino musical genres and styles.
Nearly,150 students from Ochoa's choir, orchestra, jazz and mariachi bands are participating in the show.
Heidi Nelson, the school's choir teacher, wrote and produced the show to highlight Latino musical influences through the years.
"I actually had a student one time ask me, 'Why don't we study Latin music,'" said Nelson. "It was about five years ago and my honest answer was I really don't know that much about it. So, I just started to learn and now it's going to be a regular unit that we do on a regular basis," added Nelson.
"Viva La Musica" is this Friday, February 28th at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 1st at 2:00 p.m., at the Ochoa Middle School gym. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. There is also a free reception on Saturday, following the performance.
