YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Police Department is being more proactive with public safety by giving you the chance to see how they keep the community safe.
They are already taking applications for this year's Yakima Police Department citizen's Academy.
It is a 10-week course starting in April, that walks the public through law enforcement duties in Yakima including gang enforcement, traffic enforcement, the YPD K-9 program, firearms, forensics, criminal investigations, SWAT team and operational structure.
Classes are held at the special operations building located at 207 south 3rd Street.
They will be every Tuesday night starting April 8th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
An optional Saturday class at a shooting range is also part of the academy.
You must be 18-years-old and pass a background check to attend.
This academy is free, but there are only 30 spots available so enrollment will be on a first come basis. You must apply by March 31st.
You can pick up an application at the police department or by contacting community services.
There will also be a Spanish version of this academy coming in the fall.
