Crack Measuring 65-Feet Long Discovered in Wanapum Dam

Posted: Updated:

EPHRATA, WA - A 65-foot-long crack is discovered in Wanapum Dam which is downstream from Vantage along the Columbia River.

An engineer noticed a slight bowing above the spillway gates near where cars drive across it.

Wanapum Dam is a mile long and was built in 1959. It's one of Washington's sources for hydroelectric power.

Utility officials claim there is no public safety threat but they have begun draining the water to get a better look at the damage. A spokesman called the crack "a serious problem."

A dam failure would mostly affect power generation in the region and area farmers and fishermen.
