WHITE, PASS, WA. -- The Oscars Sunday is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz. Locally, the movie is getting an unusual winter tribute on the slopes of White Pass.
If you live in the valley and are searching for some snow, all you have to do is click your heels. And drive to Oz, also known as White Pass for the weekend. Winter Carnival is complete with Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Lion and the Scarecrow. Oh and of course the Wicked Witch of the West.
It took weeks to create the whole gang from the Wizard of Oz using chainsaws and chisels. Sorry Dorothy, you're not in Kansas anymore.
"You won't find this kind of quality," Kathleen Goyette of the White Pass Ski Resort said. "I mean there are really four or five places around the world that do this."
After a rough beginning to the season, White Pass officials hope the always popular carnival can remind people that the snow is still around to enjoy.
"It's a huge event and we're so thankful to have it," Goyette said. "Especially because it's been a little rough in terms of snow. So seven feet of snow showed up just in time to build this epic castle and we couldn't be happier."
This weekend alone White Pass expects about 9,000 people to come enjoy the magical Land of Oz.
"Carnival is an amazing opportunity for people from the valley, whether they ski or not to come up and enjoy the Winter Wonderland we've got up here," Goyette said.
All are welcome. Even if you lack a brain, heart or the courage to go down the slopes. Just follow the Yellow Brick Road. On second thought stay away from any yellow snow.
