PORTLAND, OR - According to Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, 20 of the 28 double-shell tanks on the Hanford site could be cause for concern. While one was confirmed to be leaking last year, new reports allege several of them could be at risk.
Wyden hosted a press conference on Saturday and called for the Department of Energy to be open about what is going on with the dangerous nuclear waste stored near Richland.
"This morning I want to tell the people of the Pacific Northwest that they are once again being misled by the DOE's never ending pattern of failing to disclose what it actually knows about conditions at Hanford," said Wyden.
The senator also criticized last fall's 'framework' for the cleanup that was released by the DOE which also did not mention the tank flaws. He called that "indefensible."
