Trench Collapses in Portland, Rescuers Try to Extricate Worker

PORTLAND, OR - A sewage worker is safe Monday after a trench collapsed on him near Portland.

The worker was buried to his waist in dirt and mud for three hours while crews worked to save him. He was alert the entire time but reported having trouble feeling his legs.

The collapse happened near Beaverton where workers were replacing a sewer line.

PORTLAND, Ore. - A sewer trench collapsed Monday in Portland and one worker was buried to his waist in the 15-foot hole.

Crews were giving sports drinks and oxygen to the man, while rescuers tried to suction mud and dirt out of the hole. The man reported having trouble feeling his legs.

The collapse happened in Cedar Hills, Washington County, where the workers were replacing a sewer line. Rescuers from Tualatin and Portland were at the scene.
