BENTON CITY, WA - Benton City is looking a little brighter at night these days. The LED street light replacements are now going up.

The state Transportation Improvement Board is doing a study on small towns and LED lights. Benton City is one of just five chosen for the project.

After months of paperwork, crews began installing the brighter, more energy efficient lights on Monday. More than 120 new lights are going in and it's estimated that these new ones will lower the energy and maintenance costs by up to 50%. They will also last up to three times longer than the old ones.

"It's good. Good to see it get done. We've been waiting on it for a year and we finally got all the paperwork and everything done and it started Monday," said Mayor Lloyd Carnahan.

The Transportation Improvement Board is trying to figure out if the cost of replacing the lights coupled with the potential energy savings is enough to do this in all small towns around the state.

The reason the Board cares is because they are the number one source of funding for small town street maintenance.
