Bail Set at $500K for Yakima Man Who Set Ex-Girlfriend on Fire

YAKIMA, WA.--The man accused of lighting his ex-girlfriend on fire stood quietly in a Yakima Courtroom Friday.

According to court documents, 48-year-old Stuart Bachman attacked his ex-girlfriend 55-year-old Elva Grant with a bat and then lit her on fire. A roommate heard her screams, kicked down the bedroom door and helped get her out of the house.

Bachman faces charges of harassment, arson and assault.

A family member of the victim said they're disappointed. They wanted to see him face attempted murder charges.

"I mean he could be out in a couple years," said Abel Marichalar. "My cousin will probably worry about her safety for a very long time. We feel that he should be going in for a long time."

Court documents said Grant received second degree burns to her shoulders, ears and face that cover about 10 percent of her body.

Bachman's bail was set at $500,000.
