UPDATE/ HITE PASS, WA - Highway 12 over White Pass is now open to drivers after a weekend mudslide.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has cleared the mud, debris, and boulders from the highway.

WHITE PASS, WA -- Warm weather is good news but it's causing some travel troubles.

The soggy hillside let a mud slide loose on White Pass, closing the highway for more than 12 hours. The Washington State Department of Transportation reopened the road early Sunday afternoon.

For anyone looking to drive through White Pass in the last day, Mother Nature had another plan.

"Next thing you know this big wad of mud comes down and there's this 10 foot stump in the middle of the road," Brad Moore said.

Brad Moore is an assistant basketball coach at Toledo High School. He was on his way back home from the state tournament in the Sundome with his wife and kids Saturday. He watched as mud, rocks and even trees tumbled onto Highway 12.

"We were just like holy crap, if we would have been about 30 seconds ahead of this we would have been right in the middle of the rocks," Moore said.

Over three inches of rain caused boulder sized rocks and three tree stumps to crash down on the road from a 100-foot hill.

The Department of Transportation closed White Pass Saturday night and worked as quickly as possible to clear more than 300 cubic yards of debris. That work left families like the Roseman's sitting and waiting.

"It's no big deal," Wayne Roseman said. "It's nice and warm in here."

People did everything from knit to have snowball fights waiting for the pass to reopen. The line grew as an 11 o'clock opening was pushed back.

"Sorry for the inconvenience," Chuck Laidler said. "As soon as it's safe we'll get it back open again and get you through here."

"Let's hope it opens up pretty soon but we want to be safe so we'll be patient," Betsy Harris said.

And that patience paid off when the pass opened right after noon.

"It's raw nature," Brad Moore said. "Hopefully you're not in the right place at the wrong time."

Avoiding the disastrous plans of mother nature.
