COLLEGE PLACE, WA - The Walla Walla County Coroner says the Mayor of College Place has died.

The coroner says 54-year-old Richard Newby died at his home on Sunday, March 9th.

The coroner plans to perform an autopsy on Monday.

City Administrator Pat Reay says the death appears to be from natural causes, and while it was unexpected, it's not suspicious.

Reay says a family member found Newby, and couldn't revive him.

Newby had been mayor of the town since 2009. He won re-election in November in the city of 8,800 people.

Reay says Newby worked for the Bonneville Power Administration and was very civic minded and engaged in the community.
