WEST RICHLAND, WA - A local business is stepping up after they heard about the vandalism to the military memorial in West Richland.

"Found out about it and it just really pissed me off," explained Bill Leach who owns The Bunker, a military surplus store in Richland. He is also a retired police officer from West Richland. Leach knows that the memorial has a certain value to those who have served in our area.

"Not just as a business, but as a community effort, to within 24 hours step forward and say that they could help us in replacing the items that were missing, I appreciate that, I really do," said Eugene Lamm, the president of chapter 3 for local Combat Veterans International.

The Bunker is going to work with the local chapter of Combat Veterans International and the City of West Richland to restore the items taken including a helmet, bayonet and an M-16 rifle.

"Since I haven't served, my 3 sons did, I know a lot of veterans. We have a lot of Veterans come in our store. Knowing how they feel about this, the destruction done, it was important to us to make sure that place got put back in place," said Leach.

The veterans say they plan to rededicate the memorial after any permits necessary are secured through the city. They say the support they are receiving now is much appreciated.

"It is good to see in the community. The whole Tri-Cities as a whole...I think we have a great effort going in supporting local vets and we just need to continue it," said Lamm.

The veterans would also like to see those items stolen returned if possible by the person who took them, even if it is anonymously. Since our story first aired we have had calls and emails from people across the region asking how they can help, saying they would like to see the memorial restored and respected.
