WALLA WALLA, WA - A new structure at McNary Dam should help Pacific lampreys migrate up the Columbia River.

The Corps of Engineers contractor, Marine Industrial Construction of Wilsonville, Ore., completed work last month on a $337,000 passage at the dam near Hermiston, Ore. The passage has baffles with a range of water velocities.

Lampreys reportedly have difficulty entering existing fish ladders.

Officials hope to revive Columbia River runs of lampreys which have declined drastically in recent decades. Lampreys are culturally significant to Pacific Northwest tribes for food and medicine.
