CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN, WA - An avalanche that was intentionally triggered by the Ski Patrol at the Crystal Mountain resort at Mount Rainier brought down more snow than expected and wiped out a chairlift.

The resort says on its Facebook page that no one was injured Monday afternoon as the area was closed.

The avalanche destroyed the bottom terminal and towers of the High Campbell lift. The resort says it will be replaced this summer.

The avalanche was triggered by an explosive to prevent the risk of recent heavy snow breaking lose on skiers and snowboarders.

Crystal Mountain is located on the northeast corner of Mount Rainier National Park. It covers 2,600 acres and has 50 named runs. It's also open in the summer with a scenic gondola ride.
