BENTON CITY, WA -  Firefighters in Benton City are trying to figure out what started a fire at a mobile home early Thursday morning.

The fire broke out around 2:12 a.m., on the 700 block of Della Avenue in Benton City.

Neighbors reported seeing smoke and fire coming from the back of a mobile home and thought someone might still be inside. When firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed, but after searching the property, firefighters found that the home was empty.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire and, at one point, flames were as high as 7 feet.

"This is an old trailer...an old 70s model. So this is pretty consistent with other homes that are here. they burn really fast and once it gets going it's just like kindling and they go from one end to the other," said Chief Ron Duncan of Benton County Fire District 2.

The homeowners, who were out of town when the fire happened, have been notified.

Chief Duncan says they will let the building air out before returning later Thursday morning to investigate.
