KENNEWICK, WA - Students at Phoenix High School in Kennewick got some one-on-one time with an award-winning author on Thursday, as part of the upcoming Cavalcade of Authors.

Andrew Smith is one of 16 published writers featured this year. He spent the day working with students on writing, as well as gave them insight on publishing. The California native says it is important that young adults develop their creativity and are able to share it in a positive way.

"When I come to a school, especially like this one, where there's such  a level of enthusiasm and energy toward what the kids are doing, it kind of invigorates me as a writer, as a father and also as a teacher. I really love it!"

Smith is an award-winning author of several young adult novels including Winger and the Marbury Lens.

The Cavalcade of Authors is an annual writing conference, held at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, that continues to grow every year. Organizers say they expect around 1,000 students to attend the conference.
