SPOKANE, Wash. – A new era in Whitworth football will officially kick off at home in the Pine Bowl when the Pirates open the 2014 season by hosting Northwest Conference foe Lewis & Clark on September 6th.

The 2014 Whitworth football schedule features ten games with five at home and five on the road. It also features a seven-game NWC slate for the first time in school history.

The Rod Sandberg era begins with a home game against Lewis & Clark. The game was originally scheduled for the end of the season on November 15th, but Whitworth agreed to move the game up to September 6th at the request of Pioneer athletic officials.

Additional home games include a non-conference tilt with Chapman University on September 27th. Whitworth will celebrate its 125th anniversary the weekend of October 11th and the Pirates will make the home game against Willamette part of those festivities, which will include Homecoming and Heritage Gallery Hall of Fame inductions.

The final two home games are a mixture of old and new. The Pirates host Puget Sound on October 25th. The Loggers are Whitworth’s oldest continuing rival, dating to the first meeting between the schools in 1904. Then the Bucs host George Fox on November 1st. The Bruins will be playing their initial season of NWC football in 2014 and the two schools have never met on the grid iron.

The five road contests feature two trips to California on back to back weekends. The Pirates will play non-conference games at Whittier (Sept. 13) and at La Verne (Sept. 20). The three road tilts within the conference include games at Pacific (Oct. 4), Linfield (Oct. 18) and the regular season finale at Pacific Lutheran (Nov. 8).

Whitworth is coming off a 4-6 record in 2013, including a 2-4 mark within the Northwest Conference.
