RICHLAND, WA - The Winter Olympics are not over just yet in Sochi. Many Americans are competing in the Winter Paralympics and one of those Olympians has a local connection.
In Richland we have the cousin to now bronze medalist Amy Purdy. Purdy competed Friday in the first ever Women's Paralympic Snowboard Event. When she was 19 she came down with bacterial meningitis and lost both of her legs. Today she is an actress, motivational speaker and previous amazing race contestant. Now that she adds medalist to that list, her family could not be prouder.
"She's always just been another member of the family so to suddenly see that notoriety and almost celebrity status....we're all in awe," explained Purdy's cousin, Ron Belden from Richland.
Purdy is heading to Hollywood. To top it all off she is actually set to appear this season as a contestant on Dancing With the Stars.
If you would like to watch more of our amazing American Paralympians compete in Sochi you can tune in to NBC Saturday morning at 9 for the live broadcast of the United States v. Russia hockey game.
