YAKIMA, WA - Yakima Firefighters are trying to figure out what caused an apartment fire Monday morning.

But neighbors tell us, they suspect it was a lit candle.

Firefighters say they contained the flames to one unit on the 600 block of North 6th Street. Crews responded around 8am on Monday, and knocked down the fire after a few minutes.

The fire destroyed a bedroom and everything inside. There is also smoke, heat and water damage throughout the rest of the unit.

Firefighters say they originally heard reports that someone was trapped inside, but learned that wasn't the case after they searched the unit and found it empty.

Instead firefighters say the people who live in the apartment were at work during the fire.  No one got hurt, but the blaze caused about $40,000 in damages.

Firefighters say there is evidence of one working smoke detector in the home.  The Yakima Fire Department recommends having one working smoke detector in each room of each floor of your home, including your basement.
