Cougars Selected To Play Montana In Postseason WNIT

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State University women's basketball team was selected to play in the Women's National Invitation Tournament, the WNIT selection committee announced Monday. The Cougars earn the program's first trip the WNIT and are selected to a postseason tournament for the first time since 1991.


WSU will face the University of Montana in the opening round Wednesday in Missoula, Mont. Game time will be announced Tuesday afternoon.


Washington State owns a17-16 overall record, the most wins since 1995-96, went 9-9 in the Pac-12 Conference and reached the semifinal round of the conference tournament for the second time in the last three seasons. The Cougars beat four ranked teams during the season, the most by any team in program history, knocking off No. 10 Nebraska in Lincoln, beating No. 25 Arizona State and No. 21 Colorado in Pullman and posting a 75-68 victory over No. 20 California at the Pac-12 Conference Tournament.


Washington State will be making its first postseason appearance since earning the program's first and only trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1991 as an at-large selection. The No. 11-seeded Cougars lost at sixth-seeded Northwestern 82-62. Head coach June Daugherty takes her third school to the postseason after leading Boise State to the NCAA Tournament in 1994, Washington to the NCAA tournament six times along with two strips to the WNIT (1999, 2004). WSU is one of four Pac-12 teams selected to the field of 64, joined by Colorado, Oregon and Washington.


Montana went 22-10 overall this season including a 14-6 mark in the Big Sky Conference and los t to North Dakota in the Big Sky Conference Tournament title game. The Grizzlies lead the all-time series with Washington State 21-17. The two teams last met in 2007 with Montana claiming a 74-54 victory in Missoula.
