SPOKANE, Wash. -

At 86-years-old, former Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote remains one of the biggest fans of his Spartans and couldn’t be more excited to have MSU in Spokane. The number four seed takes on Delaware Thursday afternoon at the Spokane Arena.

Heathcote was honored by Gonzaga and Michigan State when the Spartans last came to Spokane in 2011. Heathcote lives on the south hill. He said that he thought that would be the last time he would see his Spartans play in the Lilac City, until Sunday when he started watching the selection show. He told his wife at the time that he thinks they were going to come to Washington. She said “not in a million years.” Sure enough, after ten minutes Heathcote said Michigan State was sent to Spokane and he jokingly added “that just proves I’m smarter than my wife.”

Heathcote said that he had lunch with Gonzaga coach Mark Few and current Michigan State coach Tom Izzo on Tuesday, but none of them discussed the road ahead for either team. Heathcote said he still hasn’t given coach Izzo any advice.

The tournament kicks off on Thursday and Michigan State plays in the early afternoon.

The Coeur d'Alene Police Department swore in Lee White as the new chief of police Tuesday. White says his first priority is to go on what he calls a "listening tour." The goal is to hear from both police and the community to bridge the gap between officers and the public. "There needs to be a tangible sense of how we expect our department members to act," Chief White said. White's swearing in comes at a time when the gap between police and the public is wide.
