NBCRightNow.com - Locals are mobilizing: our own chapters of the American Red Cross are sending out their best volunteers to help in Oso.

14 people from Eastern Washington (from Yakima and the Tri-Cites) are currently working to help those affected by the massive landslide in Snohomish County.

When we spoke with the Benton-Franklin Chapter Tuesday they told us these people could expect to be in Oso for up to about 21 days; sometimes even longer. These are people who have previously responded to some of the most catastrophic aid efforts in recent history including hurricanes Katrina and Sandy.

"This community has lost their infrastructure. People have lost their homes, their business, neighbors and friends so even people who are still happy to have escaped with their life, they're going to be suffering for quite some time," said Peggy Hoggarth of the American Red Cross.

Many of these volunteers are not digging through the mud; they are going to help the families affected. Mental health counselors are part of that group.

If you would like to help, the Red Cross always needs donations. They have a page with more information about their efforts in Snohomish County. You can find that here: http://www.redcross.org/news/article/Red-Cross-Helping-at-Scene-of-Tragic-Mudslide
