Tuesday was National Medal of Honor Day. Tuesday was National Medal of Honor Day.

YAKIMA, WA - Tuesday was National Medal of Honor Day.

Tuesday morning a small group gathered at Sergeant Jack Pendleton's grave to honor Yakima's only Medal of Honor recipient. A wreath was placed on his tombstone and the Veterans of Foreign Wars also performed a gun salute.

"It's unbelievable what it takes to be awarded the medal of honor," Rick Beck of the Veterans of Foreign Wars said. "That's our nations highest award. So we need to raise awareness of that. That's pretty important to our history."

Sergeant Pendleton served in World War Two. While fighting in Germany, he deliberately drew machine gun fire to himself, allowing his comrades to advance undetected and take out an enemy machine gun nest.
