WSU Ready for Spring Football

Posted: Updated:
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University football team will begin its spring practice schedule, Thursday, March 27, the first of 15 practice dates that conclude April 29. The annual Crimson and Gray Game will be held April 26 at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane at 1 p.m. and will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.

Under third-year head coach Mike Leach, WSU enters spring ball with 36 returning lettermen from last year’s squad that won six games and earned the school’s first bowl appearance since 2003, the New Mexico Bowl.

Offensively, the Cougars return eight starters from last season led by redshirt-senior quarterback Connor Halliday who set WSU single-season records for completions (449), attempts (714), passing yards (4,597) and tied the school record with 34 touchdown passes. WSU also returns its top eight receivers from 2013 including All-Pac-12 honorable mention River Cracraft and returners Gabe Marks, Dom Williams and Vince Mayle who each caught seven touchdown passes. The Cougars leader in all-purpose yards last season, senior running back Marcus Mason also returns after pacing the team in rushing and finishing second on the team in receptions.

Defensively, Washington State returns seven starters from a defense that forced 30 turnovers last season, tied for second-most in the Pac-12 Conference and the most by a Cougar defense since 2006. Redshirt-junior defensive lineman Xavier Cooper returns after leading the team with 13.5 tackles-for-loss including a team-high five sacks. Two-year starting MIKE linebacker Darryl Monroe also returns for his redshirt-junior season after making 94 stops.

The Cougars will practice Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at Martin Stadium and Rogers Field with the Crimson and Gray Game set for Saturday, April 26 at Joe Albi Stadium.
