UMATILLA, OR - The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office plans to perform an autopsy on the body of a man found in the Umatilla River.

Umatilla County Sheriff Deputies say the body of 60-year-old William George Powney Sr., of Hermiston, washed ashore near the Highway 730 bridge on Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies, Oregon State Police, and the Umatilla Police Department responded to the scene and searched the area before pulling the man's body from the water.

Deputies say they haven't seen any signs of foul play or injuries to the man's body. At this point, they don't know exactly how the man died.

Sheriff Terry Rowan said, "we have to find what the cause of death is before we know what we have here."

Rowan says deputies are calling this a death investigation.
