KENNEWICK, WA - The deadline to enroll for health care is just days away now, on March 31st. In Washington, they're more strict about that deadline than the federal government.

Some people can get an extension to finish their application, but Washington Health Benefit Exchange won't give people as much leeway as the federal government site.

The exchange says the only people who will get an extension on their application, past midnight on March 31st, are people who can prove their application isn't complete because of an error with the Healthplanfinder system. The exchange will then investigate the case to see if the applicant can get an extension.

"We're a little bit more stringent because we're not asking people to check a box. We're actually able to go in and verify based on an investigation from our staff whether that individual is in fact stuck or did make an effort," said Bethany Frey, Washington Health Benefit Exchange spokesperson.

A reminder to sign up for health care coverage soared over the Tri-Cities Thursday. A plane pulled a banner advertising the Healthplanfinder website and enrollment deadline.

People who complete their enrollment by March 31st will receive coverage starting May 1st.

In Oregon, people will get a 30 day extension to sign up through the Cover Oregon health exchange.
