WSDOT Crews Start Mountain Pass Cleanup

Posted: Updated:

NBC RIGHT NOW--Crews with the Washington State Department Of Transportation started work Monday to reopen the North Cascades Highway.

Right now it's closed between mileposts 134 and 171, but despite the heavy late season snowfall, cleanup crews said State Route 20 could be open by early next month.

As for Chinook and Cayuse Pass, they are still closed, but crews should start work on clearing all the snow over those passes with in the next few weeks.

Last year Chinook Pass opened up on May 17th and Cayuse Pass opened on May third.

With the late snowfall leaving snow up to 10-feet deep in some places, it is hard to know exactly when they will be completely clear this year.
