Cobell Hearing Tomorrow

BOZEMAN -

Congressman Steve Daines and other members of congress will learn how effective the Department of Interior is handling the Cobell Settlement during a hearing Thursday.

The settlement comes from a 1996 class action lawsuit against the government after Montana tribes found money collected for Indian Trust accounts were not being used for their intended purpose.

Elousie Cobell, who discovered the mishandling of those funds, was the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit against the government.

Part of the settlement was a buy-back program, allowing landowners to receive payments for voluntarily selling their land.

The land will be turned over to the tribes, consolidating highly-fractioned land.

Thursday the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs will hold a hearing to see how the Department of Interior is handling the Cobell Settlement.

Mark Azure from the Fort Belknap Indian community and Grant Stafne from the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes will testify during tomorrow's hearing.

The hearing begins at noon locally (2 p.m. Eastern) in Washington D.C.
