KENNEWICK, WA - Ticks are these nasty little critters that can carry things like Lyme Disease or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

They like to hang out in heavily-wooded and brushy areas and then attach themselves to people or pets. Generally, you want to make sure you get rid of them within 24 hours. But, the state Department of Health wants you to keep them and send them in for testing.

"They don't test the ticks for diseases but they can identify the tick and that can help because not all ticks carry diseases. It's only certain varieties of them," said Dr. Amy Person with the Benton-Franklin Health District.

The Department of Health has a form you can use to send ticks to them. They ask that you keep the tick alive, if possible, and they have instructions on how to do that.
