Murder Defendant in Eastern Oregon Doesn't Want Ex-DA as his Lawyer

Posted: Updated:

PENDLETON, OR - A murder defendant in eastern Oregon is asking a judge to remove his court-appointed defense attorney, who also happens to be a former county district attorney.

George Craigen shouted in court Monday that he didn't want former Umatilla County District Attorney Dead Gushwa to represent him.

Union County Circuit Court Judge Russell West refused to take Gushwa off the case. Gushwa says he will argue that Craigen suffers from an extreme emotional disturbance.

Craigen is accused of shooting and killing Cecil "Rob" Carter in December of 2011.

Gushwa took a leave of office in August 2010 while under investigation by the Oregon Department of Justice. He was found guilty of one count of official misconduct and resigned in May 2011.
