WAPATO, WA - A controlled burn Tuesday night near Wapato got out of hand. Yakima County Fire District 5 firefighters were called out to a grass fire along the 9800 block of West Wapato Road that was threatening homes.
Firefighters got the call at around 4:30PM Tuesday. When firefighters arrived, they found a fast moving grass fire, with two homes being threatened.
Two Yakama Nation Fire Management crews were called in to help provide structural protection. A burn out had to be done to protect one of the homes.
Several cars were burned and a large shop had some damage. Firefighters were able to get the fire at the shop under control quickly. Crews got the entire fire until control just before 8:00P.M.
No other structures were damaged.
One man was reported to have had smoke inhalation, but he refused treatment. No firefighters were injured.
The fire was caused by a controlled burn that got out of control.
The total loss caused by the fire was $11,500. Five fire stations responded, and 24 firefighters were called out to the fire.
The fire was forwarded to the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.
