PASCO, WA - A two-year-old boy is in critical condition at Trios Health after falling 12 feet out a second floor window at an apartment complex in Kennewick.

It happened Wednesday morning at the Red Pine Apartments on the 700 block of North Arthur Street.

Firefighters say the child climbed up on a couch that was in front of the window, to watch a train go by.  The window was open, with a screen in place.  The boy's mother was nearby, but her back was turned at the time.

The toddler landed on the concrete sidewalk below the window. Firefighters say it was an accident but say parents need to take extra steps to protect their children no matter the surroundings.

"We always need to be diligent about our children and where they are at, whether it be playing next to a street or playing next to a window that is a story or two off the ground," said Captain Eric Nilson, Kennewick Fire Department.

Captain Nilson says this is the third time a child has fallen out of a window in the last three years in the Tri-Cities.
