NBCRightNow.com - Many of us have personal documents stored in our homes that contain private information. This Saturday you can safely dispose of those old documents at a shred event sponsored by Crime Stoppers.

They'll take almost anything that is outdated that you no longer need that has personal information on it. When we keep those documents lying around it is that much easier for someone to find them or steal them. That can lead to identity theft, which can be costly if thieves make their way into your bank accounts.

NBC Right Now is teaming up with Tri-Cities Crime Stoppers and CI Shred to bring you this chance to protect your identity.

"Account information...all these different types of things where people can grab that stuff and be able to utilize it and then create other identities or use your own identity for their own purposes," explained Mike Blatman of Tri-Cities Crime Stoppers.

You can shred up to two banker boxes or grocery bags of credit card or bank statements, financial records, old checks or other personal documents. There is no charge but the Crime Stoppers reward fund is collecting donations.

The shred day is from 10-2 this Saturday in the Target parking lots on Columbia Center Boulevard in Kennewick and Queensgate Drive in Richland.
