UNION GAP, WA - Now that pit bulls are allowed be registered as service dogs in Yakima, one local business is now taking on the issue of making them therapy dogs as well.

Love On A Leash is an organization that is working with the ACME Training Center in Union Gap to help people certify dogs to be those therapy dogs you see in hospitals and assisted living facilities.

Staff members at the Yakima Humane Society see a lot of pit bulls come in and they said this is a huge step for the breed.

"The training aspect for pit bulls is going to be huge to allow people to see the breed in a different light and actually see them doing something positive in our community and that's a big thing," said Outreach Manager Nicole Papageorgiou.

One thing to understand is if a pit bull is only certified to be a therapy dog, and not registered with the city as a service dog, it still cannot be in Yakima city limits.

Staff said any dog can become a therapy dog if they pass the K-9 Good Citizenship Assessment which costs $25.00.
